Thread: big header problem

1. #1

Post

I am working on installing the poston
headers for the 340 on my 67 skylark. I have now
encountered 2 major problems, and I am totally at aloss for what to do. The first problem is that the header does not allow enough clearence between itself and the frame (right beside the exhaust ports) and therefore I am worried that when the engine is started, the engine torque will slam the header into the frame there. In fact, we even bent the one pipe on the header slightly at this point as well as grinding part of the frame there. Still, there is only about 1/4 of an inch of clearance. The second problem is that the transmission crossmember will not allow the
header to fit either. The header will not fit
underneath it by about 2 inches because of the flange.

I would love some help!

I don't think I can help you, but I can give you some sympathy...

Sounds like you solved the frame problem, the 1/4 inch is probably enough. After you start to drive it, watch the spot for wear. Just because you don't hear it, doesn't mean its not coming in contact occasionally.

The flange/crossmember problem, can you just have the header collector extended to put the flange beyond the crossmember?

duh... haha sometimes i feel like an idiot Thx for mentioning extending the collector. For some reason, it just did not occur to me. Also I could always cut away part of the collector and weld the flang on a bit farther up.
Thankyou
