Thread: generator to alternator conversion

Post

I am currently converting from a 6 to 12volt system on my '50 Special. I good to go on mostly everthing except on one wire, replacing the generator with an alternator (one wire). The wire is that which comes out of the current regulator to the solenoid. Need to figure out what to due with it whether to split it off the one wire or can I possibly ditch it all together? Any help would be great.

Hi, Bad Manners

I'm also Interested in Making a Generator to a One Wire Alternator Conversion on MY'56. I don't Know if the Conversion effects the Very Nostalgic and Singular Push Pedal to Start Nailhead Feature, of which I would like to retain.
Another Problem, I understand concerns the Brackets Supporting the Alternator, and a Belt Adjustment, which would require some type of Modification.
Please let Us know the Outcome of Your project, and what Changes You made to make the system operate Properly.
Wishing You both Ease and Success with Your Upgrade.

yo,

i converted my 51 special to alternator with one wire. you can choose to eliminate the regulator altogether or just leave it in place and jump the B+ (if i am not mistaken). your alternator must have an internal regulator though. i daily drive mine and just put a/c in it no problems. (ps change everysingle bulb)

Converting my 1951 72R from generator to alternator this week.

My brand new 10si alternator (Delco XL Parts says so) is due in this afternoon. Naturally my biggest concern in the gas pedal start. Would the simplest solution be to temporarily enable this function (when needed) with a spring loaded toggle switch under the dash? Pretty good anti theft device too??

Any advice, help, interest, input or reference source would be appreciated.

Thanks,

wow this is an old one. I just ran the 2 wires into the firewall. drilled a hole in the dash and installed a push start. I have a 10si as well.

Converting to a 12 volt alternator has nothing to do with your foot start. The foot start completes the circuit to the starter solenoid. If there is no vacuum (engine not running) current will flow to starter when ignition switch is turned to run position and accelerator pedal engaged. That vacuum switch on your carburetor does not care if it is 6 volts or 12 volts.

But the relays involved do as well as the wire to dis-able the starting circuit when the gen/alt start charging.
