Thread: 96 LeSabre won't start until "Security" light goes off

This doesn't happen all the time and there seems to be no rhyme nor reason to why it happens, but it always seems to happen when I'm in a hurry and there's nothing we can do but sit and wait.

What causes that, and is there anyway to fix it without waiting the 5 minutes or so?

The lock cylinder contacts are not reading the resistor in your key, contacts are worn or dirty.

Two fixes: replace the lock cylinder or by-pass the lock cylinder contacts and the VATS.

If by-passing the security system, go to Radio Schack and have them read the resistance of the key "puck" resistor, and buy the 4 pack of resistors, about $1.

Crawl under the stearing column, and find two small white wires that are running together from up inside the column to the VATS module someplace far away inside the dashboard. There should be a connector near the base of the column, cut the wires going up to the lock cylinder, and solder in the resistor to the two wires going to the VATS module. Cover with tape or tubing and your are done.

1996 Buick Park Avenue Security Light

I recently had my transmission rebuilt. Ever since I got the car back I have been having problems with the security light staying on and not starting. After 3-6 minutes the light goes out our flashes and I can start the car. Is there any corollation between the transmission and the problem with my VATS security system?
