Iddie, I had the same problem on my '52. I know mine is 6 volts and yours is 12, but a new regulator fixed mine.
Hello again everyone,
While driving my '55 special today,I noticed that my amps guage is reading on the discharge side as I am driving. If I speed up, the needle will try to get back to center but it will not stay on the charge side of the guage, for the most part it moves back to discharge. When I pulled the light switch on,the needle really dropped to the discharge side of the guage.I tightened the generator /fan belt a little, but nothing changed.I am reading 12.4 on the battery with the engine off. With the engine running,I still get the approximate same reading. When my wife hits the gas pedal,I get approximately 14 volts from the battery, but when she takes her foot off of the pedal the needle on the guage drops back below center to discharge(this is with engine running). When you find some time would you mind giving me your thoughts ?Do you think this is the battery, generator, regulator,or ???.
Thanks in advance .

Hello Stan,
Thanks for the help.Do I simply replace the regulator,or do I have to adjust it after installation ?
Iddie, all I did with mine was install it and then polarize it. The instruction for this were with the box. Nowhere did it say anything about adjusting the new one.
Stan,
Thanks for helping me out.

Get a Delco NOS regulator not these cheap reproduction units I've got two off e-bay. What do the brass comutator bars that the generator brushes ride on look like? My 56 did what you discribed and I just cleaned the comutator and it charged. If you remove one battery cable while the motor is running and it keeps running it is charging.
Hello Judd,
Thanks for the regulator information.I did pull the positive cable off of the battery & the engine promptly stopped.I thought I had a set of new brushes, but I can't locate them now that I need them.I'll keep you posted on what I find when I get to work on the generator.

Hey JUDD & IDDIE
Where would you be able to get a Delco-Remy NOS Voltage Regulator?
I know what your saying about the cheep repops.
The Voltage Regulator was the cars brain, prior to the computer.
A NOS Part would not only be expensive but difficult to locate unless You know of a Vendor/Supplier who has stock-piled these things.

I find them on e-bay and they bid out to about twice the $24 cost of the new replacements.

You are able to find NOS parts on E-bay?
What category do you search under?
I think I have seen some from Plant Auto Parts for about 36 bucks but I imagine that they are repops.
I can't recall ever seeing NOS Voltage Regulators on E-Bay.
Do You Know who the seller is?
