    Question

What's the best tool for removing the head from a 264 cid L8? 1/2" Socket and cheater bar? Impact driver?

    Thanks!

Use some PB Blaster, Soak the bolts pretty good. wait a day and repeat the process. Start the Engine, let it heat up. wait 10 minutes to cool down a bit. The Iron will expand more than the Steel fasteners, making it easier to Break the bolts. Slow steady Pressure. You DON'T want to SNAP anything. This is not a procedure, where You want to rely on brute strenght and ignorance.

Tom's right need need to proceed cautiously. If the motoer doesn't run I would soak an additional 2 or 3 applications of penetrating oil. Once that is done I would use a propane torch to heat the area around the bolt. By going with the propane torch the heat is more controlable than oxyacetelene and is not as hot. Only heat the area around one bolt at a time. Use caution, because you don't want to anneal and cause the metal of the head to become brittle. Patience is definitely required for this process.
