Thread: what in the world have I got?

    I recently was curious exactly what my 455 really came out of and I found the following:
    between cylinders #1 and #3 is 40H24235 and btween #5 and #7 (in between spark plugs, right?) is the #76........This engine is supposed to be out of a 70' 'Lectra and has recently been rebuilt............I am very curious!
    Anything will be appreciated that may shine a light on this! I can't seem to find this in all the sites that offer Buick specifications about codes and VIN info!
    Thanks in advance!!

    The info from the engine serial number (first number) decodes as:
    4= Buick Division
    0= 1970 model
    H= Built in Flint, Mich. plant
    24235= sequential build number from the VIN of the original car this engine was put in (one digit is missing, this section should be a 6-digit number)

    The other number is the engine production code number and is also incomplete. It should read something like SF376, where the letters are the most useful characters for ID. Click on shop at the top of this screen and see the selection for Identify Your Buick Engine for more data.

    Sometimes the characters of the stamped ID numbers disappear if the block has been decked during a rebuild.

    About the only other thing that can be determined from the engine serial number is that the original car was not a Riviera. The Riviera sequential numbers started off with 900001. Other series started off with 100001.

    The Electra would be the most likely source, based on usage of the 455. It could have come from a Wildcat, LeSabre, or Skylark as well.

    Thanks very much Todd! I really thought something was either missing or not stamped well .
    The main thing I DO know about this 455 in my 71' Skylark is that it makes it go "ZOOM" and with American racing treads on the rear it does it very quickly!
    I don't know what has been done with this engine, but it sounds like alot more than 370 HP when it's romped and is the quickest car I've ever owned that was supposed to be stock!!
    Thanks again!!!
