My info shows that number as a 322" out of a 54 Roadmaster. The engine numbers don't match the vin# on pre 57 Buicks.
I think the 57 up motors had numbers stamped in front of valley pan.

I recently acquired a Buick engine and cannot seem to find a production code near the vin # at the right side head mtg. surface. I belieive it to be a 401 cu. 1959 or 1960 but would like to no more details.
The numbers I have found are;
Head casting # 1172889
Block casting # rear at bell 1165165
Block vin # right head mtg. surface V5482827
Casting # at rear of bell 3/29 , 9 , 11
Casting # rear at flywheel H 9
Casting # front at timing chain J 18
Hope you can tell me what year and cu. in. this beast is and if it is a desirable engine to build up for my hot rod project.

Your head casting is for 59-60 364/401 from here: http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference...g_numbers.html . You are looking for a 4F (1959 401) or 4G (1960 401) on the front valley pan rail. A 3F or 3G means a 364 from here: http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference...ent_59_62.html . Hope that helps!
