    Just got a 215 block and I can't figure out the numbers. Any ideas?

    3HI5593II2 HH305080

    The II2 at the end of the first number looks a little different than the rest of the numbers.

    Thanks

    Chuck,
    The first number is the VIN for the car and the engine serial number. It was typical to find the letter I used in place of the numeral 1 back then (must be harder to deface the I and make into another character).

    3= Skylark series
    H= 1961 model
    1= Plant code for Flint, Mich.
    5593112= Sequential number assigned to this car. Appears to have one too many digits though.

    The other number is the engine production code number

    H= 215 V8, high compression, 4 bbl carb
    H= 1961 model
    305080= sequential number for this engine.

    Code tables frequently omit numbers for this car because the 2dr Specials and the 4 bbl engine were introduced late in the year (April 17, 1961).
