Thread: TH400 that doesn't work in D

finally I have my rebuild 455 running sweetly in my '69 Electra and last week I wanted to drive it for the first time in the 2 years I have the car so I topped up the tranny and selected all gears, reverse worked well but Drive and L2 and L1 didn't.
Yesterday I adjusted the shift linkage which I thought must be the cause but again no drive.
When I select drive I hear the engine rpm going down a bit and the car rolls very slowly forward and it doesn't roll faster when I push the throttle.
The car has 50.000 miles on the clock which I believe can actually be true so I think the tranny should be in a reasonable condition.
Does anybody have a clue what this might be?
I have the car 2 years now and before I bought it it was standing still for at least 1 year (but probably it was a lot longer) with very little ATF in it.

I would say that you need a tranny rebuild. If the trans has been sitting that long with little or no ATF in it, the clutches have probably long since dried out. When you put it in a foreward gear, the transmission is probably just eating the clutch packs away.
I'm facing the same problem with my TH350, it has been sitting for over a year with no ATF in it and I'll need to rebuild it before I put it back in.

The good news is, if you're mechanically inclined, you can rebuild it yourself for about $100 with the proper tools.

    Good luck!

    Hi Ben,

I'm affraid I have the vacuum line attached to the carb instead of the intake manifold.
    I'll try this first.

I have the chassis service manual which covers the TH400 but this isn't easy stuff i'm affraid and what tools will I need?
I do everything myself as much is I can.
Bytheway there was about 15 pints of atf in it.
