Hydraulic jack oil is a very good substitute for shock oil. It is readily available at most auto stores, and works fine.

Can someone give me assistance with the correct fluid to use in the shocks for my 1953 Buick Special. It`s not every day that we have to top-up our shock fluid and I am wondering what to use? Thanks for the replys

Transmission fluid will work as well if you're in a bind. It's withstands pressures up to 300psi on a daily basis and I've seen it used many times in hydraulic car hoists.
Kanters has shock fluid. It's put togather special for lever shocks.
