Thread: identification of transmission

I need help to identify my transmission.
I suspect that it is a SP400? After looking at the oil pan.
there are two numbers on it.
    a) 491
    b) br-66-133005

My car is a -64 riviera with a broken engine. I am now looking for a replacement. I would prefer a 425 nailhead witch would be original but could consider a 401.

I am a litle doubtful after reading your tech talk. The engine that was installed in the car and working toghether with my transmission was a 401 from 1963. I have decoded it. Does this mean that they have rebuilt the transmission somehow so that now a 425 won´t fit? Please, Help me decode the *******.

Near as I can tell, it's a SP400 out of a 66 Riv. It should work behind any 401-425. Anyone else read those numbers differently?

    Just to clarify.
Will I be able to use an early 401 made before 1963??
I read that they came with the dynaflow transmission.
Thank you very much for your help!

Before 1964, the THM400 did not exist. Only the Dynaflo. The THM400 from 64 to 66 for the 401-425 will fit earlier engines. You MAY need to change the flexplate/flywheel too.

The 57-63 Nailhead engine will accept the ST 400 trans with:
    (1) A bushing (Carmen Faso - (716)693-4090) in the crank to support the converter
    (2) Machining the center hole of the 64+ flexplate larger to fit the 63 and earlier crank flange. All bets are off on the engine balance though.

Dynaflows have the ring gear on the converter, and the ST 400 and ST 300 have the ring gear on the flexplate. The 63 and earlier flexplate is just that. A triangular plate with no ring gear. It will not fit the ST 400 or ST 300 trans no matter what you do, and the flexplate for the ST 400 will not fit the Dynaflow converter.
