Thread: removing oil pan

    Question

I need to raise to engine about 1 to 2 inches to be able to remove the oil pan from my '63 Rivi with a 401. Can I raise it by using a jack under the crankshaft? Will it hurt anything? I have unbolted the four bolts on the engine mounts and am assuming that this will work.

position the jack under one of the main caps, but put some kind of protection between the saddle of the jack and the cap.

i am curious. it seems to me that the oil pan is in the way of what you are doing. in your attempt to remove the pan, how are you positioning it, in order to get the floor jack under the crankshaft?

Here's how I wound up completing the task... I re-installed the harmonic balancer. I knew that a jack would probably damage the crank itself. I went out and bought a bottle jack and 2"x2" oak block. I centered the bottle jack under the balancer and voila! I slipped the oak blocks in the gap between the motor mounts. The oil pan slipped right out the back! Heidi, thanks for the help.

    Question

By the way, are there any recommended modifications that I should consider while the oil pan is at the powder coater? Thanks, Sergio
