Thread: identify an aftermarket cam?

    Question

I recently purchased a rebuilt 401. It is an '80s rebuilt, never installed. It was built for a bucket 't' and I'm alittle concerned that the aftermarket cam might be a little radical for my needs. The guy I purchased it from didn't know much about the engine, as it was given to him.

Is there anyway to identify the cam duration, etc...?

There should be a code on the back of the cam that identifies the grind. This will be helpful if you know who made it, and it may also identify the maker depanding on the numbers.

Any of the cam makers can put your cam on a machine that will plot your cams specifications. I would call Lunati or Crane, and see what it would run. I don't think it would cost much. The shipping back and forth might be more expensive.

If you have a friend with a cam degree wheel and a dial guage you should be able to plot your cam in your engine. Any friend with a little cam installation understanding should be a good help.
