Y engine VIN code in 1976?

I have recently acquired a 76' Electra Park Avenue and was researching the VIN. The engine code is Y which does not seem to be listed under any of the standard VIN engine codes for 1976. Could anyone shed light on this? The car was assembled at the Linden plant in July of 1976. Thank you!

this is just before GM standardized the VIN codes for all the divisions.

if it were a Chevy, it would indicate a 454.

    being a Buick, it's the last 455ci.

Thank you! I did come across that page but wasn't sure of its accuracy as the service manuals and other information posted on the web didn't indicate so.

The buickgod page is correct regarding the Y engine code (there are several errors on other items however).

The '76 Buick Chassis Service Manual was printed without updating the 455 code from T (used in '75) to Y. Secondary document sources then continued the error, resulting in the current confusion.

The factory issued a Dealer Service Bulletin later in the year correcting the mistake (see attached). Probably not that many saw the correction notice.
