    Transmission data decode

Hi, I have a 64 Skylark with the 2-speed automatic transmission. Just had everything cleaned up and found the transmission plate.

    tranny plate.jpg

I am pretty sure the '35' at the top is the model number and the '64' in the lower left corner is the model year. '298' is probably the sequential number.. Would the 'D' refer to the month of manufacture (April)?
The car is an '06C' so it's a third week of June manufacture date. two months seems like a long time period between the tranny and the car..

Any info would be appreciated.. Thanks

Here's the dealer service bulletin from 9/23/63 for '64 transmission code number identification.

I am somewhat confused... The date number on the tag is 298.. That would be October 24'th (1964 is a leap year). The fender tag on the car has a date code of 06C which would indicate the third week of June.. That would seem to make no sense at all. I can only think of a few possibilities:

    1. The transmission was actually made in October of 1963 for the 1964 model year and was installed in June.
    2. One of the tags is incorrect
    3. The car sat around for 4 months without a transmission (not very likely at all)
    4. The transmission was actually replaced at some point after the car was made.

Am I missing something here? The VIN on the engine block matches the VIN on the car exactly and the mechanic doesn't think the transmission had ever been pulled before.

My guess for the date code is something totally different. Based on other '64 ST300 bulletins, day 001 was some day (which we may never know) in the summer of '63 when ST300 production began.

These are the bulletin dates and the date code reference when a transmission change occurred:

9/23/63> 062 for sample plate. Day 062 may have been in the future at that point.

    12/10/63> 082

2/7/64>. Denotes vacuum line dia changed on units built after 1/1/64. No transmission code given.

    3/30/64> 175

    7/24/64>. 321

The service bulletins were likely issued 3 weeks or more after the change occurred on the assembly line. Older bulletins for 1963 cars indicate engine production began 8/13/62.

The model is crude, but it kind of works. Try using 8/1/63 as day 001. That makes the service bulletins coming out about a month after the assembly line changes. That puts your transmission build date at 5/24/64. This date might be a little bit early. Date could be a week or two later and still allow transmission to be shipped to KC for final vehicle assembly.
