    VIN and Body Plate

    Hi, just wondering if anyone can help me? I just got ahold of a 1967 Buick Special Deluxe 2 door hardtop. I recently looked into decoding my VIN and the firewall tag and noticed there were some things that were different. For starters, my VIN is 435177Z118105 which I found says it's a V6 car even though it has a 300 V8, it was built at the Fremont, CA plant, but idk what number off the line it would have been so if anyone could help with that, much appreciated. Then, my firewall tag looks like this:

    06B
    67-43617 B 01321
    TR-168, Paint-RR
    So I know it's a 67 but this tag says it's a factory V8 where my VIN tag says it's a V6 which is confusing, it was made in June on the second week and it had black vinyl interior and the color was Apple Red and the B says it would have been built in Baltimore, MD. Also need to know what production number the 01321 means. Now here's the numbers below that I need help determining:

    B80
    6469 (found out this means it's a 4 dr sedan even though it's a 2 dr ht coupe so the number should be 6467)
    And the final confusing number is 150466 so I need to know what the B80 and the 150466 is, I have pictures i can post if needed but I'm confused as to why they say different things. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

    1967 is tricky year. The Buick VIN number and the Fisher body tag decode differently, which is causing the confusion over V8 vs V6. Buick changed the VIN scheme in 1967 so the the last six digits of the VIN code for six or eight cylinders, but Fisher continued to use the old 1965-1966 style number scheme. If the last 6 digits of the VIN is 6xxxxx then the car came with a six cylinder engine (V6 in 1967, I6 for 1968-1971) otherwise it came with a V8. So your car came with a V8.

    435177Z118105 = Buick VIN number
    4 = Buick
    35 = Special Deluxe
    17 = 2-door hardtop coupe
    7 = 1967 model year
    Z = built at Fremont CA
    118105 = sequential number, range for Fremont V8 cars was 100001 to 121397 (600001 to 600939 for V6)

    Fisher body tag:

    06B
    ST 67-43617 BF 01321 BODY
    TR 168 RR PAINT
    B80
    6469 150466

    06B = build date = June (06) 1967, second week (B)

    43617 = Fisher body style number
    4 = Buick
    36 = Special Deluxe V8
    17 = 2-door hardtop coupe (69 = 4-door sedan, 67 = convertible)

    BF = body built at Fremont, CA (look again at your tag as just B is not a valid plant code)
    1321 = sequential body number = 1321st 43617 built at Fremont

    Trim 168 = Black Vinyl with Notch-Type Front Seat, available on styles 43517, 43617, 44307, 44407, 44417, 44439, 44467

    Paint code RR = solid Apple Red

    B80 = Roof drip scalp molding

    6469 150466 = batch/sequence numbers, these numbers do not decode, they are just numbers but they can also be found on the build sheet if you have one

    Cool, thank you so much and I had a hard time making out what the letter or possibly number between the 67-43617 and 01321 was, it's kind of worn out but it sure looked like a B, maybe it's an 8 or different letter, not sure but thank you very much for the info. And yes, the 6469 also confused me because this car is a 2 door ht, not a 4 door so it should say 6467 instead of 6469, must have been a factory mess up

    Your Fisher body tag lists the Fisher body plant code as BF and not B. The Fisher body plant code BF would be expected for a car built at Fremont, CA as indicated by the Buick plant code Z in the Buick VIN. In 1967 the Fisher body plant code for Baltimore, MD was BAL. Again, just a single B is not a valid Fisher body plant code. Keep in mind that Buick and Fisher were separate companies and they did not do things exactly the same way, thus you cannot decode the Buick VIN and the Fisher body tag in exactly the same way either.

    6469 150466

    You need to go back and read the last sentence in my first post. As I stated there, these numbers do not decode. It is just serendipity that one of these numbers ends in 69 on your body tag. 6469 does not mean 4-door sedan and 6467 does not mean 2-door, it simply means 6469 and it is not an error by the factory. You are confusing this number with the Fisher body style number, which does decode. Here is how the Fisher body style numbers would decode for a 2-door, 4-door, and convertible. Note that it is the last two digits of the Fisher body style number that indicates the actual body type (17, 69, and 67 in these examples):

    43617
    4 = Buick
    36 = Special Deluxe V8
    17 = 2-door hardtop coupe

    43669
    4 = Buick
    36 = Special Deluxe V8
    69 = 4-door sedan

    43667 (Buick never built a Special Deluxe convertible, but if it existed this is how it would decode)
    4 = Buick
    36 = Special Deluxe V8
    67 = convertible
