well, the first thing to do is verify what you've got.
all of the 77 Regal engines should have been Buick variants ( although 76 was the last year of Big Block production, so no possibility of a 455ci unless someone swapped it in ), so the distributor should be at the front and canted to the driver's side. while a distro at the front canted driver's side can also indicate a Cadillac, hardly anyone ever swaps a Caddy into a Buick.
if the distributor is NOT at the front, it's time to figure out what you actually have:

your car should have come with a 231ci v6 or 350ci v8 ( six bolt valve covers ) and, assuming it's the original mill, will be coded in the VIN.
either of which will be VERY familiar to any skilled Rover v8 mechanic. once they get past the shock of seeing it in cast iron with a bored and stroked architecture.
hopefully the seller didn't split a cylinder wall.
