New Regal owner from across the pond

Just thought I would pop in and say hello.
Just landed myself a 77 Regal, love the car but she's not loving me back!
Advertised as "few parts missing but a runner" actually means - took the carb off, cut a few pipes to make it look rough.... While not mentioning about the water running out of No 1 cylinder...

Replaced a few pipes, got a new 2 barrel carb, fitted it all up. Started first turn of the key, then billowed white smoke. Damn.

Took the plugs out out and water started running out of the cylinder lol, so I guess my first yank needs a little love!

So here I am, swatting up on all I need to know about this gorgeous looking motor.

well, the first thing to do is verify what you've got.

all of the 77 Regal engines should have been Buick variants ( although 76 was the last year of Big Block production, so no possibility of a 455ci unless someone swapped it in ), so the distributor should be at the front and canted to the driver's side. while a distro at the front canted driver's side can also indicate a Cadillac, hardly anyone ever swaps a Caddy into a Buick.

if the distributor is NOT at the front, it's time to figure out what you actually have:

your car should have come with a 231ci v6 or 350ci v8 ( six bolt valve covers ) and, assuming it's the original mill, will be coded in the VIN.

either of which will be VERY familiar to any skilled Rover v8 mechanic. once they get past the shock of seeing it in cast iron with a bored and stroked architecture.

hopefully the seller didn't split a cylinder wall.

    Thanks

Hi there, thanks for the info.

I'm sure I have the original 350, dizzy and starter in the right place, six bolt valve covers, also the correct blue.

Weathers beat me to it today so I'm hoping to get the head off tomorrow.. fingers crossed!
