    new to site

    Hi,

wanted to say Hi to everyone and introduce myself. My name is Bruce and I own a 53 buick special 2door 3 speed. We used it quite a bit first year and recently had the transmission rebuilt. Want to keep it original but sometimes finding parts is not the easiest thing. Right now I am trying to find a speedometer gear and not having any luck. Will continue searching and hoping.

Happy to be part of the group

Bruce, we can come up with the part no on the speedometer driven gear and shaft with some more information. There was a dizzying number of part numbers used in '53. The number varied according to transmission type (already known to be synchromesh), rear axle ratio, car series (Special series 40), and early or late production. Once the part number is known, it will be possible to tell which other models used the same number.

About 3/1/53 the rear axle was redesigned. As a result Buick also changed the speedometer driving gear inside the transmission. Then that led to new numbers for the driven gear.

    Here's a post from 2014 where a '55-60 Chevrolet plastic 22 tooth gear no 3708699 was used successfully to replace a 1315011.

    https://www.teambuick.com/forums/sho...r)-P-N-1315011

Buick parts books show the part no to be 1315063 for 22 tooth, std transmission use on 1940-55 models. One of these could show up one day on eBay or in someone's parts list.

The 1315011 number does not appear anywhere, even in the 1941 edition parts book. That indicates it must be a casting number or number for a component not separately supplied by Buick. It's useful nonetheless for someone who has the part with no additional documentation.
