    Assembly plant code F or L ?

    I was told of a Buick setting by the highway, I went to look at it, it’s a 67 with a vin. Code of 67 44417FL1 My factory book doesn’t show a factory code L. There are two letters but the L is in the sixth position, where is this car from. It has a four barrel carb. it looks like a 340. Of corse they want sale it’s rusting away and I need the motor and passenger fender. Dang !
    Ok I’m back after looking a little closer at the vin. code here it is 67-44417FL1 285936 Body code. First five model number, sixth digit 7, last digit of year model, now this is where I’m confused, The number 7 is in the fifth position and the F is in the sixth position. Then there is another letter L in the assembly plant code position. My book says next five digits should be car serial number. I’m sure of this I took a picture I’ve double, triple checked to be sure, there’s not enough digits, just a number 1. There is a separate set of digits 285936 listed as body code. Am I losing my mind or what ? It’s definitely a 66, 67 just by sight what have I found anyone know ?

    You're not losing your mind, you are just looking at the trim tag and not the VIN tag. The VIN tag is located in the driver door jamb. Here is how the trim tag decodes

    GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION
    07A
    ST 67-44417 FL1 285936 BODY
    TR 168-C C-2 PAINT
    E 2EX
    4EC 5K

    07A = body build date = July (07) 1967, first week (A)

    Style number 44417
    4 = Buick
    44 = Skylark
    17 = 2-door hardtop coupe

    FL1 = build plant = Flint MI (also called Flint 1)
    285936 = sequential body number, no relation to VIN

    Trim 168 = Black Vinyl with Notch-Type Front Seat available on styles 43517, 43617, 44307, 44407, 44417, 44439, 44467
    C = Custom interior trim or Notchback seat

    Paint code C = solid Arctic White
    2 = Black vinyl roof

    Option codes

    Group 1
    E = Tinted glass (all windows)

    Group 2
    E = Air Conditioner - Manual
    X = ST-300 auto trans

    Group 4
    F = Remote controlled outside driver's mirror
    C = belt reveal molding

    Group 5
    5K = Door Edge Guards

    VIN from the driver door jamb should be 444177Hxxxxxx, here is how that would decode:
    4 = Buick
    44 = Skylark
    17 = 2-door hardtop coupe
    7 = 1967
    H = final assembly at Flint MI (Buick Home plant)
    xxxxxx = sequential number, starting at 100001 for V8 cars

    a Skylark could be equipped with a v6 in 1967.

    however, i also think that Buick was following the Chevrolet VIN convention in those years and an even number model code should denote a base v8 car.

    most of your v6 Skylarks will start with 443 ( a 'California GS' was a base v6 optioned to the four barrel 340ci ).

    the BBB 400ci was only available in the Gran Sport that year.

    so your car, being a 444, should have either a two barrel 300ci or one of the 340ci engines.

    Thanks for info

    It’s good to have people to ask questions for quick answers it would take a long time to research that much information I’m going back for another look at vin.
