    455 performance questions

New member here, I'm going tomorrow to check out a 64 skylark with a 455/turbo 400/3.08 posi. Most importantly, no rust or leaks anywhere.

Anyway, this car, everything about it I was told was what I wanted to hear, except it runs perfectly fine on regular 87 octane. That tells me it will probably be at least a little depressing power wise.

Im after a daily driver that has some oomph, no monster cams, having to buy c16,etc.. Do the buicks respond well to the intake/cam/carburetor/headers treatment(within reason of course.)

I know this stuff isn't cheap like the sbc, but it's not Chevy and I really like that, having something different. East Tennessee has an epidemic of camaros , mustangs, and chevelles, not much if any of skylarks, cutlasses, or galaxies..

    Thanks in advance folks.

ask what the heads and pistons are. 1967-70 are best stock, with smallest combustion chambers. 71-74 are acceptable. 75-76, you should plan on swapping out.

ask if it's got HEI or points. HEI can be swapped into any BBB.

that means static / dynamic compression is probably on the low end.

any decent running BBB will have tons of torque. great for roasting tires and stop light drags but might be gasping a little on the big end at a strip.

3.08 isn't really a highway gear but it's not a drag gear either.

200r4 isn't as heavy duty as a TH-400 but it's got a steeper #1 as well as OD.

The car is home. That motor is a horse, out of the hole, tires are blistered easily. But, it's extremely tame, it's like a very stout stock type engine. I'm tickled pink. Oh yeah, the trams and rear end have had some love and act like it. The guy said it was a 1970 engine, I'll get casting numbers and verify.

however, it has two issues, the edelbrock carb isn't working too well. At first start it won't hardly idle till you drive about 100 feet then all is well. I'm thinking a Holley spreadbore to remedy this. Has hei ignition.

second, it has some cooling issues. 195 tstat, aluminum radiator, dual electric fans. It was in the 80's today and if I ran 70mph, temp was 215-220"yikes" around 60mph, around 205-210 and these are without the air conditioning on. Would a 160-180 tstat help, or should I go for a high flow water pump, or both? I want to be able to use my air conditioner.

I'll snap some pictures tomorrow, the accessories are all aftermarket so that'll give you guys an image of what I'm working with.

but overall, I'm happy with what I bought. This car is super nice and is the car I was looking for.
