    Straight 8 Manual Gearbox lengths

I recently bought a 263 and manual gearbox to replace the tired 248 and manual gearbox. Unfortunately I sold the old motor and box before I got the new one mounted. I have just discovered that there is about a 40mm gap between the torque tube and the new gearbox. I measured the new box at aprrox 385mm between the engine and the end plate and I am wondering if there were different lengths of gearbox. My original was a 1937 248, the new one is a 263, but I do not know the age. It was also supposed to have come out of a 1937 car as well, but I am beginning to have my doubts. Anybody out there with suggestions?

it may have come out of a 1937, but it was never original too that.

263ci production was very limited, only 1950-1953.

the only Buick engines in production in 1937 were the 248 and 320 straight 8s.

From 1939 gearbox's were column change. So if you have a floor change behind the 263ci is not the same year as the engine. Unless it had a modification. Any photo's of the gearbox? Including the casting number

It may have just moved on the springs, when the engine-box was removed. The torque tube holds the back end in position.

Are the engine mounts in the correct position? (Unsure if can be an in correct position)

    Smile Fixed!!!

You are absolutely right, after a lot of measuring torque tubes and gearboxes and deciding that there was no way the rear axle could have shifted on the springs we noticed that the front and rear hangers on the rear springs were both slanting backwards. Lifted the car up and forced the axle forward popping the front hangers so they were slanting forward and HELLO everything fits. Such a basic mistake, I just never thought of it until we tried everything else. The car had been loaded onto a truck with no motor in it and something must have hooked the rear axle popping it back and inverting the front hangers on the rear springs. Not used to cars that have hangers both front and back on the springs.
Thank you guys for all your suggestions and info.
    Cheers, Robbie.
