Purchasing a New potential toy, a 1940 Buick Super Series 50 Model Sports Coupe

I am happy with its general o/a survivor condition but am concerned that the motor is original to the car.
The engine number 5-3889700, chassis number 23713127
    Bulkhead plate Mod 56S, Style 40-4527C, Trim 810, Paint 668 or 663
My main concern is I can’t get the Buick CCC judging manual and the engine number to sync up.
Any input greatly appreciated especially those red flags

    1940 engine #

Welcome to our little world, Gregg
The number you posted is indeed a 1940 number. About 10,000 in from the start of the 1940 production. About as close as you will get. Buick numbers were not "numbers matching" until later, in the 60s. Perhaps the "5" is confusing you. That is the series number . 50 series= Super. The actual serial # is thye 3,786,214.

Validation of 1940 buick Sport Coupe

Thanks Ben for your validation. I look forward to the sound and feel of the 'straight eight' before I go, having enjoyed just about all other engine configs. For grins i was recollecting their differences.
Cylinder counts have included 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 8, 10 and one rotary. The sensual recall of the different types L, square, boxer, two stroke will now have to move over and make room for this latest visitor. I will be interested in comparing her to my current similar era cars, a 1934 3.5L Bentley and a Citroen Traction Avant. Cheers & thanks again Retrogreg

The chassis number also has a prefix digit indicating which plant assembled the car. In this case 2 = California plant. The remaining digits are the sequential build number for the car. It is typical for the engine number to run several thousand ahead of the chassis or frame number.

As a further check, the engine number and the chassis number are both about 36-38% into the number ranges for 1940 models.

The paint code combinations for 1940 ran from 541 through 557. Maybe yours is something like 553? Trim code 810 = Tan Bedford cord-(2 tone).

The sound of the inline 8 is unique. Very smooth at any speed. My favorite description of its sound is that of a bee flying around in a jug.
