    263 Start issues

    holla

I have a 1952 Special Deluxe that was converted o 12v by the last owner. Three on the tree.

I have had the car a year or so.

It started fine for say two months or so. turn key and away it went.

After this I had starter issues. The Bendix was poked. the starter would wiz over but not fire it out.

Ordered a new bendix drive from bobsautomobilia.com. Installed it fine and cleaned up the XX years of gunk from all other parts and checked over everything. Put it all together as per manual. a Straight forward process really.

Once installed back on the car its started to give me the grinding grating noise of teeth doing nasty things together
This happens 50% of the time it seems. Although sometimes when at a show or when ever we have people around looking at the car it seems to happen more.
Hell Some times it grates 5 or 6 times in a row. then for next while starts fine.

Checked the flywheel(multiple times and had others look as well). looks fine.
Adjusted the solenoids position every way i can.
checked gaps and set and min and max of factory recommendations.
Put on and off encase it was misaligned.
    Still same grind.

This is my first car that was 6v that i kept the old engine etc and not swaped it out.
Is there a difference in 6v and 12v starters or procedure when swapping to 12v?
if so what is it and what do i look for to tell if they upgraded the starter to 12v when they did the conversion.

Its darn embarrassing and makes me not want to drive the car. Have a 49 Hudson custom Im working on and the better half is saying sell the buick put the cash on the Hudson.

I was about to order a new gear reduction 12v starter from Bobs but thought to ask here first for help and advice.

    thanks

    Alex

Alex, I had the same problem with my '50 when I converted to 12V. The starter is spinning too fast, I guess, for the bendix gear to engage smoothly. I finally ripped the bendix drive gear. Bought a 12V "small" starter from Tom Telesco in MA and never looked back. In retrospect, I should have taken the starter of and had it changed to 12V when the change was made.

I see 2 choices for you. Do as I did, or do as I should have done. I am happy with what I have done.

    Hey Ben

thanks for getting back so fast. pretty much what I was thinking.
Guess all the old oil and gunk slowed it down a bit and when I cleaned it all up it started spinning faster and playing up.

How much is Toms starters? got his contact details?

    thanks again

    starter

Alex, I don't have Toms contact info handy. He goes by TelRiv on this forum. Price is about same as Bobs, I think. Since you are in Kiwi land, be nice if some one there can rebuild yours into a 12V. Probably even a 12V solenoid from a nailhead starter would do the trick. If you opt for the small starter you will be happy.
