I wouldn't rely on a picture, the position only depends on how the distributor and the gear were installed. if its off a tooth or several teeth a picture will get you in the wrong position.

Heres a near fool proof way to get it figured out:

    1. Remove #1 spark plug
    2. stuff a rag in the plug threads
    3. bump the starter switch momentarily until it blows the rag out
    4. when its blown out, you're very near top dead center #1
    5. line up the #1 spark plug wire on the distributor cap, at the position the rotor is pointed. make sure your firing order is correct on the other plug wires
    6. reinstall #1 plug and try to start
    7. use timing light to time more precisely

this will get you close, but of course not exact

    Thanks for your response Jacob!

i am grateful for such a timely response,i have tried this method already, but still seem to be off,i may be doing something wrong,i am even making sure the timing mark is on zero degrees on the timing tab, could i be that far off? if you can think of anything else i could be doing wrong? let me know .thanks again Ken.

go back to the basics: Fuel Spark Compression and Timing

is gas coming out of the carburetor?
if it shot the rag out, youre making compression
did you move the distributor back and forth from after the rag trick? don't be afraid to move it a good amount, starting with retarded and working towards advanced
    do you have spark?
are you hooked up to a battery charger or is your battery dying and having trouble turning the starter?
