As stated, Specials were the 40 series and the Supers were the 50 series. Roadasters were the 70 series.

Back in the day, each division of General Motors had their own engines and most had their own transmissions as well. Chevy had OHV straight sixes, Olds and Pontiac had flathead sixes and straight eights, Buick had OHV straight eights, Cadillacs had flathead eights and GMC had OHV straight sixes. Olds and Caddy went to OHV V8s and in the '60s, GMC had a OHV V6. When Buick went to the V8, it was diffeent from the others.

Chevy had the Power Glide tranny. Olds, Pontiac and Caddy used HydroMatic trannies. Buick had the DynaFlow.

Nowadays, you get a GM engine and transmission, regardless of the brand. I know it makes sense from a bottomline point of view but I prefer the way they did it in the old days!

    Enjoy your Buick.

    Super, Special, Roadmaster

Muley, Olds and Caddy came out with the Over head V8 in 1949.
