'56 was the last year of the 264/322 block to bell housing bolt pattern. 1957 introduced the 364 cu in and the different bolt pattern. They will not bolt up.
The 55 and 56 were very similar, both had the variable pitch torque converter. The '56 trans is usable in the '55 Roadmaster and Super big body cars. It will also fit the '55 Special and Century but it 1" longer than the original '55 trans. That moves the differential back 1". it is hardly noticeable. The extra 1" length of the '56 over the '55 is in the bell housing and converter depth. The '56 is the preferred trans for performance. It was also the 1st yr for the aluminum bell housing.
