High gear feels too low on my 47 Super

Evening all. Just joined the forum and already have a question.

I have just got my 47 Super Sedanette project running just right. I took her for a test drive, she shifts though the gears nicely and the clutch feels fine, but here's the question.

When I am in high gear - third - it feels like I need to change up to a non existing 4th gear, even at speeds as low as 30mph. It feels like it would run at 4000rpm if I ever got to 60mph

I have owned and driven many straight 8 Buicks with three-on-the-tree and they all seamed to have higher gearing and rive very nicely - this one feels different.

It doesn't feel like the clutch is slipping - it stalls if I try to drive off in 3rd. The PO put open lake pipes on it (proper system is on order) would the racket from those make the engine sound like it is running at higher rpm?

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Rear axle and differential are all original and in good order.

    high gear too low

    Welcome, Paul

I imagine the loud exhaust would make it sound like it is running too fast. There should be a series of numerals on the bottom of the differential [rear end] housing that will correspond to the gear ratio.

    Thank you Ben.

I will take a look at the differential then. Hopefully when I get my new exhaust (still on order) it will sound a lot more 'normal'.
Today I did another test drive and the gear changes are nice and crisp with no judder, binding or untoward noises.

    I'll keep you posted.

seriously, a tach isn't that expensive to buy. get one and know exactly what the engine is doing.

Now that's a good idea. Thank you for the link, the non contact laser tach looks like a handy gadget.
