    1967 Buick GS 400 4 speed identification question

    Hey Guys,
    I was wondering if there is any way to for sure tell if my car is an original 4 speed car. I know it is based off of what it has, but are there any #'s or markings that will prove its originality besides me just saying it is. Based off of some numbers I've found it looks like Buick only made about 2600 1967 4 speeds. Obviously the vin # & cowel tag info doesn't verify this information. It has the original munci transmission/posi traction/& original floor that has the original shifter hole cut out.
    Thanks for your help & knowledge.

    assuming the original owner paperwork is gone forever ( factory records for Buick have mostly been lost ), the only way to 'verify' it would be to find the build sheet ... which might require a full disassembly of the car to even find.

    sometimes they're over the fuel tank, sometimes they're in the car under the carpet. there have been other locations.

    other than that, all you can do is try to match the various major components.

    engine and trans will have portions of the VIN stamped on them.

    engine, trans, rear, carb will have particular part #s and stampings. OEM big block cars have their own steering coupler.

    a lot of that can be falsified if you have a particularly dedicated forger ... but that's part of the benefit of being in the Buick community. because Buicks tend not to command top dollar in the classic car market we are MUCH less of a target for that kind of thing.

    the Stage 1 registry doesn't go back to 67 but you may find something useful on there.

    I'm pretty sure all chance of finding any of that is gone as well. The gas tank was in the trunk & the carpet has been removed. I think only thing original that wasn't pulled out off the car is the headliner & it's probably not up there.
    Thanks

    Depending on the plant the car was built at, the cowl tag may have an option code for 4-speed. Post a picture of the tag and I can decode it.

    Sorry for the delay, it took me a little longer than expected to repel the Christmas in-law invasion...Unfortunately, Baltimore was one of the plants that didn't put option codes on the trim tags. The 4-speed trans was group 2 option L (see attached picture).

    10A 640
    ST 67 44617 BAL 210 BODY
    TR 198 RR PAINT
    403195

    10A = body build date of October (10) 1966, first week (A)

    44617 = Fisher body style number
    4 = Buick
    46 = GS 400
    17 = 2-door hardtop coupe

    BAL = body built at Baltimore, MD
    210 = body number, 210th 44617 built at Baltimore

    Trim 198 = Black Vinyl with Bucket-Type Front Seats, available on styles 44307, 44407, 44417, 44467, 44607, 44617, 44667

    Paint code RR = solid Apple Red

    640 and 403195 are the line and job sequence numbers and would also be found on the build sheet

    Thanks for taking the time to post that info Sean. I really appreciate it. So I guess at this point my only option is to hope I come across the build sheet, which I probably won't, unless you guys may know of other places it would be located tat I can look for it. Asside from that my car is basically as much an automatic as every other automatic made. This sucks because I know it's original 4 speed because it has the original rusted out floor with the correct hole for the shifter. Any other ideas to show proof it's an Original 4 speed.
    Thanks

    Other than on top of the gas tank and under the carpet as mentioned, build sheets have also been found under the seat bottoms in the springs, behind the door panels in the doors, and in the dash. As Bob mentioned, you can also check the trans to see if it is stamped with the last 8 digits of the VIN.

    Thanks Sean. I look those other places as well as try to match the trans to the vin #. I really appreciate all the info you've provided me with.
    Thank you,

    I looked at some of the numbers on my trans to see if I could match it to the car. So far I've found that both the casting #3385010 as well as the date code P7M26 stamped on the tranny both match 1967. I've been unable to locate a matchin vin # but I've read that this number may be stamped on top of the transmission which I will only be able to see if I remove or drop the tranny, which I will do eventually. Can someone verify that I'm correct on my findings & let me know if in fact the stamped matching vin # is located on top of the transmission. Thanks guys.
