    ah, very interesting. that looks like it might be a 'made for export' car, originally sold in France.

    you may have the low compression "LW" engine?

    it won't, they are defining different things. the VIN ( V ehicle Identification Number ) defines the actual serial number. the body / Fisher plate tells you the sequence in the Fisher plant and many of the options on the car.

    VIN
    4 94 47 5 H 907386
    4 == Buick division
    94 == Riviera model
    47 == 2 door hardtop coupe body style
    5 == 1965 year
    H == Flint, Michigan plant
    907386 == sequential production number

    Body plate
    ST 65-4 94 47 FB 44409 body
    TR 628 ZZ
    XNT-3BT-50

    ST 65 == year
    4 == Buick
    94 == Riviera model
    47 == 2 door hardtop coupe body style
    FB == Flint, Michigan
    44409 body = sequential body number

    TR 628 == Black vinyl interior, probably a bench front seat
    ZZ == repeated letters mean a monochrome car where the roof and body are the same color, in this case Silver Cloud Poly

    XNT-3BT-50 == option codes
    X = power windows
    N = vent windows
    T = 4-way power seat
    3B = rear window defogger
    3T = rear center armrest
    5G = rear seat belts ( if this really is a "50" or "5O" i have no idea what it means )

    Gran Sports built for sale in the US can be identified in a couple of way.

    They have an LX coded engine: Two four barrel carbs, finned aluminum valve covers, larger exhaust, a BS coded ST400 transmission, and a 3.42 ratio positrac rear end.

    Badges and the valve covers, plus the carbs, intake, and air cleaner can be swapped. The BS coded transmission and the LX block with the Engine Serial Number that Matches the VIN tag are your best bet - at least for cars sold in the US.

    In case you don't know where to find the engine stamping (not casting) numbers, here is where you look. The "CODE" number is the year and cubic inch identifier:
    years - J=1963, K=1964, L=1965, M=1966
    cubic inches - J=401, W=425, X=425 with dual four barrel carbs.

    The Engine Serial Number should match your VIN

    IF you have something different, post it and someone will decode it. I've never heard of export Gran Sports but there's alway a first.

    It looks like you have a 65 Riviera with a 64 Riviera engine. 5H907386 would have been stamped in your engine if it was original: 5=1965, H=Flint Mi assembly plant, 907386 for the sequential production number for the car. Your engine is 7K1098681: 7=Riviera series, k=1964, 1=Flint Mi assembly plant, 098681=sequential production number for the car. Also, KW370 tells us it it is a 1964 425 CI engine with a single four barrel. 370 is a date code.

    Looks like the trans is from yet another car. BR=401 designation, 66= 1966 model year, 119179=sequential production number of the car.

    yeah, do you have a dual quad carb setup on the car? that's pretty much the defining characteristic of the GS engine.

    sounds like an engine + trans swap for some reason. you might consider the possibility that an early production 65 might use some left over 64 pieces, but i don't see how you can have a 64 engine and a 66 trans pieced together in a 65 model car and think it's original.

    It's still a 65 riv with a 425 and ST400 trans. That was the bigger of the engines available in the 65 and it has to be fun to drive. The parts have no idea what year they are from as they perform together as a 65 riv would. That body style was one of the best ever produced by Buick. Enjoy it for what it is and forgot what it is not.
