    1962 buick special

    How do you tell the difference between a '62 buick special & a special deluxe? Options? Were there any 'deluxe' emblems, or did it just still say special?

    Special or Special Deluxe?

    Did you figure it out? I had the same questions last week after I bought what I thought was a 62 Skylark.
    Here's some help if you're still looking...http://www.oldride.com/library/1962_buick_special.htm

    There's also a Body Plate decode here on the forums I just can't locate at the moment. Hopefully you found it

    I'm still searching for info as to emblems and such also but the body code will tell you if it was a Special or a Deluxe and will also give you Trim, Paint and a list of some of the options at least.

    Mine is a (Style 62- 4167) which is the 1962 Special Deluxe 2 dr convertible. (Trim 110) which I did not find but reasoned that it was Vinyl since that's what is in the car and it's all original
    Even with this info I'm still somewhat confused because the VIN number includes a letter I as the 2nd symbol which is not listed ...

    The letter"I" in the serial number/vin was used instead of the digit "1" to make the serial number more difficult to copy

    Ok. I've established it's a '62 special deluxe 4 door hardtop. Though i am 100% certain it is an original 2bbl 215ci car, the body plate doesn't necessarily confirm what i know about the car. If i can get a day off from work that does not rain, i will re-confirm.

    Trim 100 = Blue Vinyl with Bench Front Seat, available on style 4167 only

    In this case I is the year digit for 1962 (A=1954). Here is how to decode the serial number:

    https://www.teambuick.com/reference/years/62/62_vin.php
    https://www.teambuick.com/reference/years/62.php
    https://www.teambuick.com/reference/...ody_number.php

    The explanation of the first digit could be clarified as shown below:

    First digit: identifies the series

    0 = Series 4000/Special V8
    A = Series 4000/Special V6
    1 = Series 4100/Special Deluxe V8
    B = Series 4100/Special Deluxe V6
    3 = Series 4300/Skylark V8
    4 = Series 4400/LeSabre
    6 = Series 4600/Invicta and Wildcat
    8 = Series 4800/Electra 225

    1962 was the first year for the six cylinder engine (after six cylinder production ended for the 1930 model year) and 1972 was the first year the VIN contained a digit that identified the specific engine the car came with. So, for 1962-1971 you can tell if your car came with a six or eight cylinder engine from the serial number or VIN using this:

    -For 1962-1964, if the first digit of the serial number is a letter (A, B, or C), then the car came with a V6

    -For 1962-1964, if the first digit of the serial number is a number (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, or 8), then the car came with a V8

    -For 1965-1966, if the third digit of the VIN is an odd number, then the car came with a V6

    -For 1965-1966, if the third digit of the VIN is an even number, then the car came with a V8

    -For 1967-1971, if the 8th digit of the VIN is a 6, then the car came with a six cylinder engine

    -For 1967-1971, if the 8th digit is anything other than a 6, then the car came with an eight cylinder engine

    The Special Deluxe came standard with the following items which were not standard on the Special:

    V8 2-barrel 155 HP
    Full-length bright trim molding along sides
    Bright window reveal moldings
    Oil filter
    Custom padded cushions
    Deluxe steering wheel
    Carpeting front and rear
    Dual horns
    Bumper guards front and rear
    Cigarette lighter
    Dual sun visors
    Super deluxe wheel covers
    Power-operated top (convertible)

    The buyer could choose nearly all options individually if desired for the Special.

    Many Thanks to the guys with the knowledge! I've learned a good bit here and saved loads of frustrating search time.
    I have plenty of other questions so I'll keep an eye on this thread, right now I have to walk the dog Thanks again, guys!
