    Love buick's and have had many...I have ben trying to pin down what motor one of my cars has. it is a 350 with a 4 barrel carb and is stamped with a engine #4871017 on the front drivers side of he block so I am thinking 68-72 but have no clue what it came out of. 350 stamped on the back of the intake. any ideas for info would be great.

    Can you post a picture? 4871017 doesn't seem to be a valid Buick engine number stamp. If the number you have posted is correct, maybe it is a rebuilder's stamp. The general format for an engine number is:

    4YPxxxxxx
    4 = GM division number for Buick (used 1969 and later)
    Y = last digit of model year
    P = build plant (would be a letter for US plants)
    xxxxxx = sequential number matching last six digits of car VIN

    The site will not let me post a photobucket picture?

    Probably because that would be a link and you were still a Newbie and at that level there are some restrictions. You should be able to now as as you are now a registered member. If not, what happens when you try?

    I can see at least one number at the end that you don't show completely in the photo and there should another one after that. Try getting a wider shot that includes more of the space after the number.

    48Z1017xx
    4 = Buick
    8 = 1978
    Z = built at Fremont, CA
    1017xx = sequential number, range for Fremont was 100001 to 167861
