I think the earlier oil filter housings were set up for a canister filter. That would not fit in place of the later spin on filters in the later chassis. That is most likely why your Dad went with the remote filter. Cross the Fram number with AC or Wix to get a better filter on there.
Since we now know he put a Buick Nailhead back in it, look in our reference section to find out where the codes are located on the engine and what they mean. They will be on the valley pan rail on the front of the engine. Report back with what you find or if you need more help.

There is a spin-on oil filter adapter to replace the canister. I will have to look it up & report back with the info. At least this way you will have a regular type filter that hangs straight down & the engine will oil better WITHOUT ALL that extra hosing. I've found out the HARD way about the amount of volume that's being lost.
