    Request for Buick Century sport Coupe from 1939

    Hello,

    I'm Nicole Pahl from Germany and iīm new here. I'm writing in behalf of my father. He has got a Buick Century sport Coupe from 1939 (Vehicle's identification number 9462701236)

    A few weeks ago the axle shaft on the right back side broke.

    I talked to another man from the US and we ordered a few things from him like bearing, differential as well a a new axle.
    Unfortunately the axle doesnīt fit. The broken one got 12 splines. The new one 10 splines. The man told me that all original buicks us a axle with 10 splines. He guessed that weīve got an axle from pontiac or Chevrolet.

    Donīt know really what to do now and just want to ask if anyone got any idea how we could fix the problem? I contacted a lot of stores, but until now no one could help me.
    Does anyone got an idea or had the same problem once?

    Hope someone can help me

    Nicole

    Based on the serial number, your father's car is a McLaughlin-Buick and was built in Canada at the Oshawa ON plant, not the US.

    9462701236
    9 = 1939 model year
    4 = Buick
    6 = Series 60 (Century)
    27 = 2-door sport coupe with opera seats, 4-passenger
    01236 = sequential number, range was 00001 to 04031 for Oshawa built Buicks
    (Canadian model 4627 = US model 66S)

    I don't know if everything interchanges between the Canadian and US built Buicks. Here is a breakdown of the axles for US built fullsize Buick's, but sounds like you may have gotten an axle from a 1937 Buick:

    1937: 10 spline axles (Series 80 and 90)
    1937-1955: 12 spline axles (Series 40, 50, 60, and 70)
    1938-1942: 13 spline axles (Series 80 and 90)
    1956-1962: 33 spline axles
    1963-1970: 30 spline axles
    1971-1976: 31 spline axles

    Rear axle

    Nicole greetings! I think the solution to your problem starts with pictures showing your original axle(broken)and as much of the rear assembly as possible. Books such as repair manuals, don't always tell accurately what is supposed to be on US cars, let alone exported ones. One would need to know exactly what is currently on the car. Sorry, need more info!

    Ask on http://forums.aaca.org/forum/12-buick-buysell/
    But as above photos would help a lot
    1939 Buicks have a lot of 1 year only parts
