    Starter issue

My 1950 Buick starter will sometimes engage when I turn on the ignition before I prees the start switch under the pedal. When this happens the starter will not disengage wben the motor starts. Only an occasional problem. Any ideas?

From your description of your problem I think the switch on your carburetor is hanging up. It is normally closed and when a vacuum is present it becomes open. Remove the switch and lube it up with WD40 or the like. I think that will fix your problem.

There was no switch under the gas pedal, as built by the factory. The switch is mounted on the side of the carb. When you depress the gas pedal, a slide inside of the switch drops and the starter is engaged. It is supposed to disengage when the engine starts.

As the other poster stated, disconnect the the wires from the switch, disassemble, clean lube and reassemble. This is for the Stormberg carbs. IIRC, the Carter carbs used a different switch.
