    1958 Buick transmission problem

    Hi,

I'm from Germany and a owner from a 1958 Buick Special 4 door Sedan.

Sorry for my english hope everyone can understand me.

Today I drove my car, if the transmission oil is cold the transmission works very soft.

If the oil is hot and I want to engage reverse gear, the transmission shifts very rough.

The oil is fresh, No Leak, enough oil is inside.

    There is a distinct ****.

    Thanks for help.

Harsh engagement is a common trait/complaint of the dynaflow. Most often it is due to idle rpm set too high, it should be at 450-500rpm. If choke is still set and is on high idle, it has a very harsh engagement.

If idle rpm is correct, you may have soft, torn or worn out motor mounts, transmission mount and/or thrust pad at rear of trans. Bad mounts allow the engine and trans to move around alot during gear engagement. Commonly, drive engagement is softer and less harsh than Low or Reverse. John

    Dynaflow

    Hi John,

    thanks for you information.

I will check the idle rpm.

Maybe we made a wrong idle rpm.

Which component does reducing the idle rpm?

    I have a Stromberg carburattor.

Maybe the shoke ist not right? How can I find that component in my car?

If the engine is cold, which idle rpm we should have?

If I use the brake pedal, the idle rpm should be lower, right?

    How can I that adjust?

The engine runs well, if the motor is cold, start immediately and also in warm condition.

You are in right, the idle rpm must be doing lower if I select a gear.

    How can I that adjust?

    I have a other question.

What function have the dash pot top of the engine beside the carburattor?

My dream car came before 1,5 years from Pharr Texas near mexican border line to Germany. The B 58 is a survivor.

    Thanks for help.

I will check the idle rpm. ...........(A cheap tach/dwell meter works well for checking rpm at idle.)

Which component does reducing the idle rpm?.............(Base idle screw, facing forward I think....Consult your shop manual)

    I have a Stromberg carburattor.

Maybe the shoke ist not right? How can I find that component in my car?........(If it starts up and runs good when cold, it is ok)

If the engine is cold, which idle rpm we should have?......(It will be on fast idle cam when choke is active, likely over 1000 rpm)

If I use the brake pedal, the idle rpm should be lower, right?.......(Brake pedal has no effect on rpm, putting it in gear will .)

    How can I that adjust?.....(.????)

The engine runs well, if the motor is cold, start immediately and also in warm condition............( OK, don't mess with it.)

You are in right, the idle rpm must be doing lower if I select a gear. .....(That is normal)

    How can I that adjust?

    I have a other question.

What function have the dash pot top of the engine beside the carburattor?....(It slows the decel rate to idle so engine won't stall

Thanks for help..........(You are welcome, your English is fine. You need a shop manual)
