    1972 Buick Gran Sport

This is my first post. I enjoy learning more about Buicks in this site. I have just purchased a 72 Gran Sport. I am having problems finding the engine ID number. I hope this site can help me.

is your GS a 350 ( 6 bolt valve covers ) or 455 ( 5 bolt valve covers )? that makes a difference in some number locations.

Its a 350 in a 1972 skylark. It is supposed to be original.

okay, so you're looking for a two character code that starts with a 'W'.

it should be stamped onto the face of the block between the #1 and 3 spark plugs. you'll probably need to take an old tooth brush and brake clean / gasoline / etc to it in order to clean the road grime off so you can read it.

    IF
the block has ever been decked by a machinist, those numbers will all be gone.

i've heard that sometimes you can make a milled number legible again by using a mild acid wash but that's pretty hit and miss.
