1950 Temp Sending Unit Bulb Locacation

I am trying to figure out where the location of the temp sending unit bulb is located on the block of my 1950 248. When I got the engine it had a petcock in the block located below and to the left (towards firewall) of the distributor. I removed petcock and tried to install aftermarket mechanical temp gauge but bulb hits something 1/4" in. I can't find any other place where I believe bulb should go. Am I missing something obvious?

According to page 10-88 of my 1950 shop manual, the temperature vapor bulb is "...attached by a plug to the right rear corner of the engine cylinder head so that it extends into the cooling water."

Muley has given the correct location. Removing the original bulb can be tricky. Don't expect it to come out with a gentle tug if its been in place since the last valve job (or longer). Expect to wreck it. I did.

The bolt that holds the rocker arm shaft support is in alignment with the temperature sender and if that bolt is to long it can reach the sender. Remove that bolt. I am speaking from experience. If after removing that bolt the sender still does not come out you can pour WD40 down that bolt hole and let it work for a while. It costs about $75 to rebuild that sensor and borban (spelling) tube.

    Found it.

image.jpgLooks like it's broken off in the head. It's too cold in the garage to investigate right now so I'll have to wait for abreak in the weather to get a closer look.
Thanks guys for helping me locate it.
