    comes out of reverse

Hey Men... My 56 buick special 322 automatic, will slip out of reverse when I'm backing up. The shifter moves its self from reverse to drive when backing up. Of course it immediately go's forward when it doe's this. You can pull the shifter back into reverse and it's ok till it moves its self back to drive again. Note: this car had sit for several years before I got it running.. Don't know if that is a problem or if maybe it's a mechanical, or maybe a shifter linkage problem, or something else. Thought one of you might have experienced this and can help me out. thanks ronnie

Check motor mounts, transmission mount, thrust pad mount. If any of these have movement in them they can, & do, pull the trans. out of reverse. When backing up, reversing, the torque is applied to the right, passenger side, motor mount & will lift the engine.

You were right on the money Telriv. Just got back to my reverse problem on my Buick. I checked my motor mounts last week and they were both completely separated. Ordered a pair from Kanter, and just got the mounts installed this morning. Tomorrow, I will get the motor locked down to the mounts, and give it a try. I'll let you know how I come out on this. thanks again

Good news, glad to hear. You must be VERY CAREFUL with this popping out of reverse thing. It CAN & WILL destroy the planetary gear set. Check your linkage adjustment. I believe there's a shop manual for '56 on this site. Do a search.
