Hello Everyone,
I'm new to the forum. I want to share with you some useful info that I found concerning the speedo gear on my 1940 Buick Eight Special.
When I bought my car last November, the speedometer wouldn't turn. I noticed that the speedo cable was missing, so I replaced that. Still, nothing. Next, I got under the car with it up on jacks and in drive
(very dangerous) to visually inspect the driven gear off the side of the trans. It wasn't spinning, which explains why the cable wasn't spinning and the speedo wasn't working. I pulled the driven gear out of the transmission and I saw that the teeth were all worn down. It's a 22-teeth gear and the part number stamped on it is 1315011, although I was told that 1315063 may be a later number.
I spent the entire summer looking for this gear, with no luck. To make a long story short, I ended up buying a plastic 22-teeth gear off of Ebay for a 1955-60 Chevrolet. The Ebay ad said the gear was for "1955-60 Chevrolet Speedometer Gear (Green/22 teeth) #8.183 ... The Chevrolet part number is 3708699."
So far, that gear is working well and the speedometer is working fine. I hope that this helps someone.
