Thread: Spark plug Gap?

  1. #1

    Spark plug Gap?

Got 8 new Champion spark plugs from Napa and they are gapped at .35.
The ones that I took out were between .30 and .35 on the gap guage. The shop manual says they should be gapped .23.
Anybody know what's best or what's worked best for you?
My car is a 1950 Buick Super with original Straight 8. Manual.

    THanks,
    Sean

PS: I was using a flat gap gauge not round.

These show .25, so .23 would be good.

The .35 would be for other applications with a 12 volt system.

Would .035 be recommended were a 6v has been converted to 12v?

Was wondering the same thing. Thanks!

Yes, once converted to 12V, an OE 12V coil will handle .035". It would be possible to increase it beyond that with high performance coils and wiring. One concern as you increase the gap is the old straight 8 wiring cover and running the wires close together could lead to premature failure due to cross firing.
