    1970 455 Motor/Rochester Carb Question

    Hey Guys,
I'm a little confused with a motor I just purchased. It's a 1970 455 #1231738 SF Code motor with Cylinder heads #1231786 that the guy pulled from a Riviera. The Rochester carburetor is #7040246 LK date Code #2230, which according to everything I look at is a Stage 1 Carburetor. Now the part that I'm confused with is the fact that I thought a SS code 455 is a stage 1 not the SF code. Can someone clarify this for me? Do I have a stage 1 motor possibly?
    Thanks,
    Josh

You are correct, the SS engine code is for 1970 455 Stage 1. Carbs are easily changed, so I would think you don't have a Stage 1 engine block. Heads and camshaft can also be changed, you maybe you should check those if the engine has been rebuilt.

Carb is correct, but it carries a Sept. 2, 1970 assembly date...that could be a clue for a replacement carb......if the seller says he pulled it from a Riviera.....Buick literature stated that the "stage 1 " badge was not used on the '70 Riviera but the motor was a stage 1 with a 370hp rating code "SF"...you would need to do a little research especially on the heads. Pics are from the Buick Performance Club describing the stage 1 valves. My opinion is.......maybe
    Good luck
