More than likely needs to be rebuilt. Or, I sell BRAND NEW "Mini-Starters" for them.

Hi all , i have a 1955 special , a bit of a problem . when i press the gas pedal; to start , i get a clunk , so i take my foot off , and try again , after a few clunks , it turns over , sometimes it turns first time ,but what would cause the intermittent start . Thanks for any help !!

I have one of Tom's units in one of mine and it is great. But in your case it may just be the starter relay. As a test jump 12v+ to the black wire coming up from the starter to the relay (be sure it is not in gear, since this bypasses the safety switch). If it still clunks rebuild or replace the solenoid, then the starter.

could be worn out brushes or a burnt contactor disc in the solenoid. The solenoid is pretty easy to take apart then the disc can be cleaned up with a wire wheel on a grinder along with the contact surfaces of the copper bolts. I don't know how long its been since Ive bought a new solenoid. I have repaired many over the years.
