    Super Turbine 300.

Anyone around that know much about these.
Rebuilds, Parts, how strong are they.
There was a time Some drag guys used 2 speed power glides for some reason.
    Anyone remember why?

My 1968 Super 300 stays together but leaks a lot.
I want to try and get by with it behind my 455 upgrade this summer. Maybe next years tax return will have some for one a refurbished switch pitch 400.

The 300 will take very little abuse from the big block Buick. When Buick put it behind the Nailhead in the 65-66 Gran Sport Skylark, it had extra clutches and greater line pressure to make it more durable. The one in your 68 does not have that protection. You might think about a beefed up TH350. That it will fit in place of the 300 using the same driveshaft yoke and driveshaft.

The 300 and Power Glide have little in common. Built glides were/are used in very light and powerful drag racing vehicles. The extra lower first gear of the three speed actually wastes energy and slows the very light and powerful combination down as well as uses extra energy to turn.

    St 300

    Thanks Guys.

I thought I read somwhere that a turbo 400 and a 300 were close enough to the same length so that if you change the output shaft yoke the swap could the same prive shaft.

    Anybody???

The original shaft needs to be cut down slightly, welded and and balanced with the new yoke when installing a ST or TH 400 in place of a ST 300. It is only about a 5/8" difference, but it prevents the yoke from bottoming out when the rear suspension articulates. The other danger with the old shaft is breakage with a 455 in front of it. They can break off where the become weak from years of exposure and fatigue. The back of the shaft where the rubber dampner is located is of particular concern. If your tires really start to hook and the driveshaft breaks there is a lot of resulting damage. I can tell you that firsthand!

Don't even think about trying to run that ST300 behind a 455. TH400s are inexpensive and readily available. Install a stock one with your 455 and build it up later when your inheritance comes in.
