    1936 Buick Coupe

Hi, I'm building a 1936 Buick coupe. I'm putting in a 401 nailhead with a TH400 tranny. The engine has a casting number B1349046 on the back of the motor with tells me it's a 64-66 but on the front stamped in front of the intake cover is #7J1071332 --- can anyone tell me what this number means Thanks Ken

    1349046 is listed as a 59-66 401 casting.

7J1071332 is the serial number of the car the engine came from:
7 is for the Riveria series.
J is for the 1963 model year.
1 is for the Flint, Mi assembly plant.
071332 is for the series number in the line (Buick).

Is this a silver engine as Riveria engines were painted silver in 63 only? Also, it should have a triangular flexplate with no ring gear. The converter on the Dynaflow had the ring gear on 63 and earlier Nailheads. You will need a later Nailhead flexplate (64 and up) and a kit to convert the rear of the crank to a smaller flange for the ST 400 transmission. The crank changed in 64 to accommodate the smaller converter snout. Is your ST400 made in the Nailhead pattern or the BOP pattern? The BOP ST400 will not fit the Nailhead without an adapter. The Nailhead ST400 made from 64-66 are the only ones that are a direct fit on the Nailhead, but the 64 model was not a switch pitch model like the 65 and 66.

I have the adapter in stock Ken & can source a flexplate for you also.

Also, forgot to add. On the opposite side of the 7J is also a two letter code which would positively identify the engine as a 401 or 425. It will be "JT" for a '63 401 or a "JW" for a 425.
