The reference section picture is wrong (doesn't show the plant digit) and the text contains some typos. Your car serial number should be 8 digits, the first digit indicates the plant and the last 7 digits are a sequential number. If you scroll to the bottom of the reference section it gives the plant digit and the 7 sequential digits even though it calls it 6 digits. The engine serial number should start with the letter V (for V8 because Buick built both the I8 and V8 in 1953) and then be 5 to 7 numbers long, with the last number being 5 for Series 50 or Super. Either the car serial number or the engine serial number can be used as the "VIN" on paperwork. The first year the car and engine serial numbers match is 1957 for Buick.
