Why my 56 buick wont charge?

If the generator charges when you ground the field, the generator is ok. The regulator could be suspect. Do one last test with all the wring hooked up and ground the field terminal at the regulator. This will eliminate the wiring as a possible cause of the problem.

If you connect the A terminal of the gen directly to the battery, the charging current will not show on the factory ammeter.

True,i was assuming he'd use an external multimeter since reading the factory gauge while under the hood would be pretty hard.

Ray cow ,I grounded the field terminal as you said and she still showed it was charging so I guess I will order a voltage regulator and hope that cures it. Thanks Bruce.

I found short in the ignition switch wire and replaced it and the voltage and she charging like a Cazey. Now gotta have the radiator boiled out due to20 years of storage.Thanks for all your help guys.Bruce
