Thread: 225 v6 oil leak

    Wink 225 v6 oil leak

Hey guys I'm new here and I have a 1968 Jeep CJ5 as my daily driver spent the last year a half putting it together and I'm only 17 so it's a pretty sweet toy.... Anyways on to the problem I have a 72 225 in my jeep and recently I noticed that it was losing 1 to 1 1/2 quarts of oil about every 3 to 4 weeks and I had to replace my line that went to my oil pressure gauge with a new steel braided line instead of the plastic line the PO used. After I did that it started leaking around the Oil filter housing I don't have leaks any where else and I wanted to know is this common? Is there a fix for it? I know it has high oil pressure from what I've read these 225's came with a 455 oil pump which creates 20 psi at idle and I max at like 70 to 75 psi at 4000 rpm..

Any help will be much appreciated!

eh, that should be a Buick 350 / 340 / 300 / 215 oil pump and timing cover. SBB and BBB v8s have similarities but they are different animals. also, the Buick 231 / 1st gen 3.8L / 4.1L v6s and Rover v8 variants from 1967 to sometime in the 80s should work.

sounds like you have oodles of pressure. PO probably turned the pressure relief screw in or shimmed the pump gears already.

not unusual for Buicks to leak but the most typical problem area is the rope crank seals. you can substitute modern neoprene seals for those if you ever do a tear down.

The PO did a rebuild and replaced the rope with the neoprene. So if I backed the relief screw out how much should I back it out. Or if he's already shimmed the gears how would I go about fixing that?
