Thank you Steve. Not that familiar with undercarriage, but I suspected it would have to be raised
For the most part, for the amount of work required to drop the pan in the GS it's almost as easy to pull the engine. This way it can be worked on much more comfortabily instead of having oil dripping in your hair.
Just my thoughts.

In the meantime seller, who is 800 miles away, has advised he has determined it is only the pan gasket, not a rmbs, and has replaced it. To me it looks like pan can only be dropped a very sigt amount and it would be darn difficult to to snake a gasket intact under the cank and in place without damaging it. Do you think this is possible. Once again, thank you for your advice. Hopefully I can close the deal on the GS and become a contributing member.Jim
It is hard to get to the pan bolts near the cross-member without raising the engine. I am not saying it can not be done, but it would be much easier with the two motor mount bolts removed and the engine lifted a little (trans mount loosened).
To replace the pan gasket, the pick up-tube connected to the pump would need to be removed. That would also be very difficult without some room or cutting the gasket.
