front pump removal on a '53 dynaflow?

hey guys. i recently purchased a 1953 Buick special, and i has a major tranny fluid leak from the front. seller said he though it was a front pump seal.

i have pulled the trans and started to disassemble the pump to get it off the shaft, but i cannot seem to get the back half of the pump assembly off. i unbolted the front cover, removed it, and the one of the stators, then the little clip on the input shaft, but the next piece will only slide a little bit then not anymore.

what is the process here to get the pump off so i can change the seal?

Look for snap rings on that shaft. There's 2 of them. Once the torque convertor is off, you will see the bolts that hold the front pump in. If you decide not to fix the tranny let me know.

I would not touch that without a shop manual, lots of stuff in there. Dave Graham sells manuals on CD, I got mine for a reasonable price for my 55, not sure if the 53 is the same. The factory shop manual is very thorough on the rebuild of converter and transmission.

I would be surprised if it weren't identical to the '52, so if you want to get started, you can find the '52 information here:

Disassembly of the 53 converter is quite a bit different from 52. 53 was the first year for the new type converter with the internal gearset.

And considerably different from the 55 as well. I am doing you a favor by not commenting on the 53 procedures.

The 53 was marketed as the first year for "Twin Turbine." It is a vast improvement over the 52 model. Even the rear output shaft is different.

All 53 Buicks had twin turbine dynaflows. The 53 Special's flexplate, and bellhousing differed from the same parts used on all other dynaflows, before and after 1953. The block to bellhousing adapter may have differed as well. I have yet to compare the 53 adapter to a 52.
